The Self-employment Program (STA)

This program is a tool to help individuals create their own jobs through self-employment.  The program provides these individuals with various types of support during the business start-up period.  Assistance may include coaching, on-going technical advice, and financial support.  Coaching will be tailored to suit the needs of the client and can include subjects such as business planning, accounting, marketing, etc.

What must be demonstrated

  • Economic viability of the business;
  • Sound knowledge and pertinent experience in the chosen business field;
  • A potential market for your products or services which will NOT lead to competition in sectors where the market is already saturated.

Nature of financial aid

The financial aid is in the form of Employment Assistance allowance for a maximum of 45 weeks, as determined by the CLD Entrepreneurship committee.  The client will receive a maximum of $380/week, more if their current claim is higher and still active.

Phase 1:   The client receives up to 12 weeks of Employment Insurance benefits to complete their business plan, as determined by the STA Coordinator.  Upon completion, the client presents their plan to the CLD Entrepreneurship Committee.

Phase 2:   The CLD Entrepreneurship Committee assesses the client and the business plan, and determines how many (if any) additional weeks of financial assistance the client is to be allotted, for a maximum (Phase 1 & 2) of 45 weeks.

Restrictions

Franchises, as well as businesses with sexual, religious, political or other controversial activities are not admissible.  Professional consultants with a single client or if the majority of their revenue comes from a few clients, are also not admissible.
